Two Washtenaw County hospitals have earned spots among Michigan’s top 10 hospitals in Newsweek’s America’s Best-in-State Hospitals 2027 rankings. Trinity Health Ann Arbor ranked No. 7 in Michigan, while Chelsea Hospital secured the No. 8 spot, recognizing both hospitals for their commitment to quality care, patient safety, and positive patient outcomes.
The recognition places both hospitals among the state’s leading health care providers and highlights the strength of Washtenaw County’s health care community.
Trinity Health Ann Arbor and Chelsea Hospital were among four Trinity Health Michigan hospitals recognized in this year’s rankings. Trinity Health Grand Rapids also earned a top 10 position, ranking No. 10, while Trinity Health Livingston was included among the state’s best hospitals.
“This recognition is a direct reflection of the dedication our physicians, nurses, clinicians and support teams bring to patient care every day,” said Michelle Peña, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, regional chief nursing officer for Trinity Health Michigan. “This also reinforces our commitment to delivering safe, high-quality, compassionate care and continuously improving the experience and outcomes for our patients. We are proud our hospitals have been recognized among the best in Michigan and are grateful for the trust our communities place in us.”
Newsweek, in partnership with Statista, evaluated hospitals nationwide to identify the top-performing facilities in each state. The 2027 rankings recognize 800 hospitals across all 50 states and the District of Columbia, drawing on hospital quality metrics, medical professional recommendations, patient experience surveys, and patient-reported outcomes.
For the first time, the rankings also incorporated data from the Leapfrog Hospital Safety and Quality program, including measures of patient safety, clinical quality, staffing, ethics, and outpatient care. Additional quality indicators from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) were included to provide a more comprehensive assessment of hospital performance.
The rankings were determined using four key measures:
- Hospital quality metrics: Clinical quality, patient safety, and accreditation data from CMS, Leapfrog, and other sources.
- Hospital reputation: Recommendations gathered through a nationwide survey of medical professionals conducted in June and July 2026.
- Patient experience: Feedback from patients through the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey.
- Patient-reported outcomes: Evaluation of hospitals’ implementation of Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs), which assess health outcomes from the patient’s perspective.
