About This Session:

Employee engagement has come to the forefront in the last decade or so as one of the defining characteristics of great organizations. We all know and appreciate the importance of employee engagement… but what about the opposite?

The opposite of employee engagement is usually identified as “disengagement.” If we take a deeper look at what underlies disengagement, however, we believe that its root more accurately lies in resignation.

The dictionary defines resignation as: an accepting, unresisting attitude, state; submission; acquiescence: To meet one’s fate with resignation.

This mental state, if allowed to persist, will result in what the dictionary gives as a second definition of resignation: a formal statement or document stating that one gives up an office, position, etc. Essentially, when people feel resigned, if they have a choice, they will resign!

The Great Resignation may be in the rearview mirror, but there are lessons to learn from it: Dislodging disengagement and displacing it with inspiration and empowerment is essential to attracting and retaining people that are committed to and capable of making an impact.
