Ann Arbor SPARK’s Winter 2025 Entrepreneur Boot Camp wrapped up with a high-energy celebration that captured what made this cohort one of the most memorable to date: engagement, connection, and a shared drive to build something meaningful from the ground up.

“This was definitely a strong cohort—super engaged; one of the most connected and active groups,” said Boot Camp managing director, Lee Gorman. “The level of participation, peer support, and enthusiasm we saw from day one really elevated the entire experience.”

Since 2007, SPARK’s Entrepreneurial Boot Camp has helped early-stage tech founders sharpen their business models, gain valuable feedback, and build the resilience needed to navigate startup life. The winter session hit capacity with 12 participating companies and showcased the depth and diversity of our region’s entrepreneurial talent.

Founder Connections That Matter

The founder community plays a powerful role in the Boot Camp experience. “Building a startup is hard and often isolating,” said SPARK Entrepreneurial Services Director Loren Townes, Jr. “Having peers who are going through similar challenges creates a support system, encourages accountability, and sparks idea-sharing. It’s not just about networking—it’s about having people in your corner who understand the grind, offer feedback, and keep you motivated when things get tough. That kind of energy can make all the difference early on.”

That spirit was echoed by many of the participants, who spoke to the value of not just the content, but the connections.

“We truly appreciate all the insightful presentations, guidance, and connections provided by you and the team,” said Derek Fraser of IQ Labs. “Your support has been incredibly valuable to us on this journey, and we’re grateful for the experience.”

“The Boot Camp has brought much more than we expected,” said Bowei Yang, founder of LabKeep. “Thank you!”

“It’s been a powerful reminder that every venture starts somewhere, and it’s the bold who take those first steps,” added Mila Elshobary of Health IQ. “Thank you again for your belief in me and for creating a space that truly empowers aspiring founders.”

Ann Arbor SPARK extends its sincere thanks to the dedicated coaches and mentors who play a vital role in the success of Boot Camp. Their expertise, thoughtful feedback, and unwavering support provide an essential foundation for early-stage founders as they refine their business models and prepare for next steps. By consistently showing up with both insight and encouragement, these mentors help build the momentum that drives startups forward. As Lee often shares, it’s this deep level of engagement that continues to make Boot Camp such a powerful experience for participants.

Top Honors: Innovation in Health Tech

This cohort’s Best of Boot Camp competition recognized two standout companies with cash awards to help propel their growth. The $25,000 top prize went to HeraWell Technologies for its flagship product, BedConnect—a digital platform designed to streamline bed and referral management between hospitals and nursing homes, improving care transitions for patients and easing administrative burdens for clinicians..

HeraWell Technologies was co-founded by Lindsay Joseph, a former hospital CFO, alongside a team of clinicians dedicated to reimagining transitional care. “Boot Camp allowed me to validate our model for BedConnect and deeply engage with the Ann Arbor entrepreneurial community,” said Joseph. “We’re proud of how far we’ve come and even more excited about what’s ahead.”

SaliBiotics, founded by Siew-Ging Gong, earned the $10,000 runner-up prize for its innovative probiotic solution designed to improve oral health and combat tooth decay, particularly in orthodontic patients. “I have really enjoyed being part of the Boot Camp program,” said Gong. “I learned a lot about how to craft a clear and succinct story. Thank you for the wonderful opportunity.”

Supporting Startups, Building the Region

SPARK’s Boot Camp is just one part of a broader strategy to support early-stage tech companies in southeast Michigan. By providing the tools, mentors, and community that startups need to grow, Boot Camp helps lay the foundation for more high-impact companies to launch and thrive in our region.

The results speak for themselves: dozens of Boot Camp graduates have gone on to secure funding, expand teams, and bring innovative products to market—contributing to the strength of our local tech economy.

“Thank you again for your support and guidance during Boot Camp,” said Mohan Vallabhaneni of Buddy Connect. “It’s been incredibly valuable and motivating.”

As we celebrate another successful cohort, we’re reminded that every thriving startup ecosystem starts with early support—and the bold individuals willing to take the first step. For more information about the Entrepreneur Boot Camp and how it helps founders move from idea to action, visit: annarborusa.org/bootcamp
