What Is A Smart Intersection?
The City of Ann Arbor is home to 21 “smart” intersections thanks to an award from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). These intersections are equipped with cameras as well as radar and infrared sensors to detect possible dangerous situations and send alerts to road users. This technology, known as cooperative driving automation, aims to create safer roadways and reduce traffic congestion.
The Smart Intersections Project (SIP) team consists of the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI), Ford Motor Company, Qualcomm, Toyota, the City of Ann Arbor, Integral Blue, P3Mobility, Purdue University, and WSP to accelerate deployments across the country and to create a roadmap for the commercialization of this technology.
