Atomic Object Supports Growth with Move into Former Duo Office

Atomic Object Culture

Expansion underscores investment in Southeast Michigan, in-person collaboration

Custom software consultancy Atomic Object relocated to a larger Ann Arbor office suite today at 123 N. Ashley Street—a space formerly occupied by Duo Security.

Since establishing its office on Fifth Avenue in 2013, the Ann Arbor team of designers, developers, and delivery leads has grown from four to 45. Atomic Object’s new location can accommodate 100 employees, has twice the conference room capacity, and offers space for hosting community events.

Managing Partners John Fisher and Jonah Bailey say the expansion reflects Atomic Object’s paced growth and its commitment to Southeast Michigan as a hub for innovation and talent.

“Our move is about more than just square footage,” said Bailey. “It signals our belief in the power of in-person collaboration to solve complex problems and in Ann Arbor’s role as a key player in the region’s burgeoning tech ecosystem.”

Over the past 12 years, the employee-owned company’s Ann Arbor team has built more than 90 custom software products for local and national enterprises, startups, and researchers. It has mentored more than 20 recent graduates through its Accelerator Program, hosted tech meetups, and sponsored initiatives to widen access to tech careers. In 2023, it launched a fellowship program to support local students of color pursuing careers in computer science.

While many tech companies have shifted to fully remote models, Atomic Object continues to prioritize in-person collaboration. Across four locations—including Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids, Chicago, and Raleigh—its 115 employees work in a hybrid model, spending a majority of their time in the office.

“We’ve found a sweet spot between individual flexibility and team cohesion,” said Fisher. “The relationships, mentorship, and creativity that thrive in our offices can’t be replicated over video calls. Our new space celebrates the value of being together to learn, collaborate, and grow.”
