In 2008, Rich and Mickey Swortzel, an ambitious couple with backgrounds in engineering and business, launched a small tech startup from their home in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

That startup was New Eagle, a now thriving mechatronic control system creator, integrator, and supplier that serves global customers developing next-generation machines.

“We knew that Ann Arbor would be a great place to get started, since we had access to top-talent through the University of Michigan, as well as a prime location for working with developers of technology in the automotive and autonomous markets,” stated Mickey Swortzel. “What we weren’t anticipating was how quickly New Eagle would take off!” she exclaimed.

As Ann Arbor transformed into a thriving tech community–even welcoming tech giants like Google to the neighborhood–New Eagle’s business grew. After shifting around in office spaces around Ann Arbor, the Swortzels decided they needed a more permanent nesting ground for their company.

“We wanted to stay in Ann Arbor because of the great community–we love being in the heart of innovation, as well as having access to great restaurants, sporting events, music, and arts…it’s such a wonderful community to live and work in, and a great place to welcome our international clients to!” states Swortzel.

So in 2014, the Swortzels purchased and moved New Eagle in to its present office complex on the west side of Ann Arbor.  Custom-designed to cater to New Eagle’s collaborative culture and unique needs, the new space features a software lab, prototype-development garage, open office floorplan, and a distribution center.

“Staying in Ann Arbor was one the best decisions we’ve made,” states Swortzel.  “We have the space we need to work on projects ranging from custom software work to building a prototype vehicle, all while staying in the Ann Arbor community we love.”

The Swortzels see a bright future in Ann Arbor, with the rise of the autonomous industry. “We’re thrilled by the success of Ann Arbor’s MCity in the autonomous vehicle space, and are excited by how New Eagle can help autonomous system developers build smarter, safer machines with our control systems,” states Swortzel.  “With tomorrow’s technology being developed right in our backyard, there’s no better place for an American tech company to be than Ann Arbor.”

As the city of Ann Arbor rakes in awards from best city to live in America to best city for a green career, the promise of the city’s growth is a positive sign for the businesses that help economically back it. “We benefit from Ann Arbor’s growth, and are proud to contribute to its economy as employers and innovators,” states Swortzel.  “We look forward to growing alongside it!”
