Ann Arbor SPARK, in collaboration with the Economic Development Council of Livingston County (EDCLC), is pleased to announce the successes achieved in 2024, as both organizations work together to strengthen economic growth and resilience across Livingston County. In advance of the EDCLC Annual Meeting on Thursday, November 7, Ann Arbor SPARK is sharing highlights of the year’s impact, from substantial investments in site readiness to initiatives aimed at bolstering local businesses and workforce development.
Among the achievements this year, the launch of a new EDCLC website has provided a dedicated digital resource for businesses and community members alike. With this user-friendly platform, visitors now have a Livingston-specific destination for business resources, community information, and insights into local economic initiatives.
A key highlight was the commissioning of the 2025-2027 Economic Forecast Report for Livingston County, prepared by the University of Michigan. This report serves as an essential tool for local businesses, policymakers, and stakeholders in navigating future economic conditions and opportunities in the region.
In partnership with the EDCLC, Ann Arbor SPARK also secured $7.1 million in “Site Readiness” grants to support infrastructure improvements up to the Latson Road Interchange, as well as Pleasant Valley and I-96. These funds will aid ongoing site development, enhancing Livingston County’s appeal as a destination for new business and investment.
Throughout the year, Ann Arbor SPARK and EDCLC collaborated with local companies and stakeholders to ensure business support and growth. Over 70 local retention calls were conducted with Livingston-based companies representing more than 6,100 local employees, resulting in more than 50 referrals to stakeholders and businesses for essential resources and B2B connections. Through these interactions, EDCLC continues to serve as a bridge between businesses and the resources they need to succeed.
Since 2012, Ann Arbor SPARK, on behalf of the EDCLC, has facilitated over $418 million in new capital investments across Livingston County.
To engage students in the manufacturing sector, the EDCLC hosted the 2024 MFG Day, with participation from over 150 students who toured 12 local firms, gaining insight into local manufacturing careers. Additionally, funding for student transportation supported over 1,000 students in attending career exploration field trips across the county, helping to build future talent pipelines.
The EDCLC’s Manufacturing Collaborative, an employer-led group of 16 local employers working together on talent strategies for the local manufacturing industry, continues to drive data-based approaches to workforce development, strengthening the county’s talent pool and supporting the industry’s growth. In 2024, the Collaborative hired a person dedicated to increasing career awareness visibility for manufacturers in all five county school districts.
At the upcoming Annual Meeting, EDCLC will recognize outstanding contributions to the local economy by honoring Weld Mold Company, Michigan Works! Southeast, and Small Business Champion Award winners Pam McConeghy and Ron Long, celebrating their leadership and dedication to the Livingston County business community. During tomorrow’s signature event, the EDCLC will host a panel discussion focused on access to capital. Moderated by SBDC Consultant Amanda Binder, the conversation is expected to focus on highlighting resources and unboxing the various ways small businesses can access capital and other resources for growth. Panelists adding to this conversation include George King, Bank of Ann Arbor; Nicole Dietrich, Lake Trust Credit Union; Amy Rencher, MEDC; and Jesse Hayes, Skinphoria. Special thanks to EDCLC Annual Meeting sponsors Bank of Ann Arbor, Lake Trust, Michigan Economic Development Corporation, Explore Brighton Howell Area, Trinity Health, ITC, Michigan Works! Southeast, Comerica, Consumers Energy Foundation, and Hatch Stamping.
Phil Santer, Ann Arbor SPARK chief of staff, reflected on the partnership’s impact: “Livingston County plays a critical role in our region’s economic success. By investing in local businesses, workforce initiatives, and essential infrastructure, we are working to ensure a prosperous future for the community. Ann Arbor SPARK is proud to support EDCLC in advancing opportunities and building a strong foundation for sustainable growth.”
As Ann Arbor SPARK and EDCLC prepare for the coming year, plans are in place to support the Small Business Hub at the Howell Chamber by introducing new small business programming and growing the number of business participants. Plans are also underway to establish more career awareness activities focused on the healthcare industry in partnership with the Livingston Educational Services Agency (LESA). Together, the organizations remain committed to fostering a vibrant and resilient economy for Livingston County and its residents.
