ANN ARBOR, MI was named the 7th best city for women in the workforce by Nerdwallet. According to the Census Bureau’s 2014 American Community Survey, women hold 78.4% of jobs in the health care and social assistance industry, in workplaces such as physicians’ offices, hospitals and rehabilitation centers.
Nationwide, the workforce participation rate for women is 10 percentage points lower than that for men. In Ann Arbor, however, the difference is 3.6%. Similar to Duke University’s impact in Durham, the University of Michigan shapes Ann Arbor’s economy around health care and education. The University of Michigan Health System employs about 18,000 people, and more 10,000 people work at the university.
