Wacker is a global producer of materials, which are ultimately used in things like solar panels, paper towels, cars, paints, and textiles. It is publicly-traded, based in Germany, with more than 14,000 employees. In the United States, the company employs over 1,700 individuals between its current U.S. headquarters in Adrian, Michigan and 11 total sites (seven production sites). In 2017, Wacker set up a small R&D center in Scio Township, and this year announced its desire to build a new $68 million regional headquarters and innovation center in Ann Arbor.

This regional headquarters and R&D innovation center will house up to 300 employees including executives, finance, human resources, procurement and logistics, researchers, and scientists — among other staff. After a process to select the site for this project, Wacker chose Ann Arbor as their preferred location because of the community’s research expertise, access to research and know-how at area universities, all while offering a place where employees want to reside.

Ann Arbor SPARK has been active in the recruitment of Wacker’s R&D center to the region. The operation fits well within Ann Arbor’s growing R&D business cluster and Wacker’s presence would produce another great place to work in Washtenaw County, as well as additional tax revenue and support for other local businesses.
