Koppert Biological Systems is the worldwide leader in the research, development and production of beneficial insects that protect and pollinate crops. Koppert Biological Systems provides a full complement of biological controls and natural pollination products to both the professional grower and the home gardening enthusiast.

Koppert has locations throughout the world, but has its Michigan operations in Hartland Township, where they produce bumblebees that aid in pollination, and conduct research and development on natural pest control solutions. Its customers are located around the world.

Ann Arbor SPARK recently worked with the company’s Hartland Township location on a talent project. Through Ann Arbor SPARK, Koppert was able to connect with the University of Michigan’s School of Engineering to find an intern that could develop an unmanned ground vehicle prototype that could be used to further the company’s work with its customers.

Commercial farm operations are vast, and the resources involved with delivering products across an agricultural operation are steep. Koppert’s robotics vehicle has potential for not only delivering the company’s pollination products, but also photographing crops.

The University of Michigan intern was able to use his summer experience with Koppert to design and build a working prototype of an unmanned ground vehicle. The company plans to begin beta testing the unit in fall 2014.
