This program is for innovative individuals living in Washtenaw County who are seeking to start a for-profit company to address our county’s social and/or environmental issues, or newer nonprofit organizations seeking to advance and support their missions using a commercial business model to complement their philanthropic operations. The organization or business must be for the benefit of residents located in Washtenaw County.
The program is not intended for fully operational businesses or nonprofits, but for those in the early stages of development and idea phases. It is a virtual theory-based class focused on understanding what it means to be a social enterprise and defining your business mission, and cohort members will be able to document a social enterprise-focused business plan at the end of the program.
Applications will close on Tuesday, March 22nd, 2022 at 5:00pm.
12 cohort members will be announced by Friday, March 25th.
- The cost will be paid for by the EC, except for the following:
- An additional $75 class materials fee will be paid by each cohort member to Build Institute, and is due by Tuesday, March 29th, 2022 at 5:00pm.

Weekly virtual classes run from Monday, April 4th, 2022 through Monday, June 6th, 2022 (no class on Memorial Day, May 30th), from 6:00pm – 8:00pm. It is expected that all cohort members will have their cameras turned on to get the best experience possible from the program, and to collaborate fully with other cohort members and the facilitator.
Full attendance is expected, and necessary to gain the most benefit from Learn. Start. Serve., and to be provided with resources, opportunities and promotion from Build Institute, as an alumni of their organization.
