Join us for a 3 part book club discussing Marilynne Robinson’s Gilead. Hosted live on Zoom by Literati bookseller and Special Editions Coordinator Young Eun Yook.
From Young Eun:
For the past two years, one of my favorite facets of working as a bookseller has been meeting with Literati’s three local book clubs. Three times a month, I felt incredibly fortunate to lead our Feminist, Poetry, and Literati Book Clubs. If it were up to me, we’d do book clubs every other day. The people who came out were incredibly thoughtful and smart readers. Together we generated new ideas through the discussion of books in a respectful, rigorous, and delightful manner. You learn the book, but you also learn yourself, you learn the people around you, and maybe you learn a little slice of the world pie.
(CS Lewis said somewhere that praising an object completes the enjoyment of it, but I also found that hearing what others found to be weaknesses of a book led me to an even more complete enjoyment of a book.)
I mourn those days. I mourn the strangers who would show up and reveal parts of their lives that were hidden until the book we were discussing drew it out of them. I mourn seeing strangers who turned into friends after months of one hour-long of book club discussions.
I miss everyone, so we’re introducing a new, virtual book club option. We will meet three times monthly to discuss one book, but you are at liberty to come to one, or two, or all three meetings. We will divide this first month’s pick into three sections and discuss only up to that part. If you want to join in from the beginning, please do! If you want to come join us after reading two thirds of the book, come join then! If you want to come to discuss the book in its entirety, come to the final book club!
Check out schedule, and join us. I can’t wait to meet you for the first time, or see you again.
